Eat Healthily and beat the credit crunchPosted by JulieB in healthy eating |
Yesterday we helped out some local students who were filming a documentary on the cost of food in the super markets and from a local market (in this case Leeds Central Market).
The family where filmed (myself, my partner and two children). We were given the cost of a family meal from a main supermarket chain. This included 4 Chicken breasts, 0.5 Kilo of potatoes, 3 courgettes and a stem of broccoli. All these products from the supermarket were wrapped in plastic or packaging.
We then had go to the local market and purchase the same food, this time from various market stalls. This time the produce was loose.
When we added up the cost of the two we were shocked at the price difference, between the supermarket and the market, the market was £5 cheaper.
This £5 saving could well go towards another family meal.
For the purpose of the filming we had to show we were surprised at this, but for our family shopping from our local farmers vegetable stall and local farmers butcher is a weekly event.
So beat the credit crunch, eat food that you can select and support your local businesses.
